Delhi’s water treatment plants hit due to untreated effluent in Yamuna from UP, Haryana: CM Atishi | Delhi News - The Indian Express
Water treatment plants in Delhi have been affected due to high ammonia levels in Yamuna water, Chief Minister Atishi said on Wednesday while accusing BJP-ruled Haryana and Uttar Pradesh of discharging untreated industrial waste into the river.
Atishi, addressing mediapersons during a visit to the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, said: “Sharp rise in ammonia levels in Yamuna due to the discharge of polluted industrial water from Haryana via DD-2 and DD-8 drains has affected the output of Wazirabad, Sonia Vihar, and Bhagirathi water treatment plants, leading to water shortage in Delhi.”
“The root cause behind the rising air and water pollution is BJP’s dirty politics. Yamuna is getting polluted because Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are sending untreated industrial waste to the Wazirabad and Kalindi Kunj barrages,” Atishi said, adding that ammonia levels in the Yamuna at Wazirabad Barrage surged to 3 PPM on Tuesday evening, making the water unsuitable for treatment.
Alleging that the BJP was using pollution as a “weapon against Delhi”, the CM said, “It’s clear that the BJP hates Delhi and is using Haryana and UP to attack Delhi.”
Hitting back, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor called Atishi’s allegations “irresponsible” and “false”. He challenged the CM to accompany state BJP president Virendra Sachdeva to Palla village at the Delhi-Haryana border and see for herself, how clean water enters the city from Haryana but progressively turns into a drain between Wazirabad and Kalindi Kunj.
